Liposuction vrs LipoLaser

Liposuction is a cosmetic medical procedure where a hollow stainless steel tube called a cannula is utilized to remove fat from deposits under the skin with the help of a powerful vacuum. The procedure can be performed on many body areas including the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, back, arms and legs. A liposuction procedure can be performed with local anesthesia, general anesthesia or with heavy IV sedation.

Is Lipo Suction Safe?

To ensure best results, the patient should be as physically fit as possible prior to surgery and should have quit smoking for a few months. Over the years, liposuction has become a much safer and common procedure than in the past. However, General Anesthesia or Heavy IV sedation can be dangerous. Local Anesthesia is a safer option with less risk of potential pharmacological complications. Removing too much volume of fat or too many areas treated at once can cause surgical trauma. Excessive surgical trauma can make recovery troublesome and increases the risk of long term complications. Performing unrelated surgical procedures on the same day can be unsafe.

There are some potential side effects of liposuction, which are typically minor, but there can also be some more serious complications which can be long term or permanent.

Side effects:

  • Bruising

  • Swelling

  • Scars

  • Pain

  • Numbness

  • Limited mobility

Liposuction can cause bruising and associated pain. This pain should subside in a few weeks. The swelling associated with the surgery typically goes away after one or two months. Scars vary in size depending on the procedure and should fade in a few weeks to one year after surgery. Numbness can persist for a few weeks and a patient may have limited mobility as a result of needing a compression garment, having to keep the head elevated or due to the swelling and pain.

Every surgery carries certain risks above and beyond regular and minor side effects. In the 90′s there were some deaths due to liposuction as well as very high rates of complication but these adverse results have been declining.

Complications:

  • Infection caused by bacteria entering the body through incisions or puncture wounds

  • Damage to skin caused by the procedure

  • Damage to tissues beneath the skin causing spotted or lumpy apearance

  • Skin necrosis or dead skin.

  • Puncture of an internal organ. For example: The intestines or other organ.

  • Contour irregularities like lumpy skin, poor skin elasticity or spotty appearance.

  • Thromboembolism and fat embolisation

  • Burns caused by friction to skin and nerves

  • Lidocaine toxicity which can cause tingling, numbness, seizures, unconsciousness and/or respiratory or cardiac arrest

  • Fluid imbalance

  • Superficial irregularities of the skin

  • Visible and disfiguring scars

  • Seromas or hematomas

  • Nerve injury

  • Blood clots in the leg or lung

  • Excessive blood loss

  • Excessive loss of body heat (hypothermia)

  • Aspiration pneumonia

  • Depression caused by disfiguring skin abnormalities

  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia, other medication or materials during surgery

  • Brain damage due to lack of oxygen under general anesthesia

Some of these complications can be considered minor, however others can be quite serious. Another potential risk is post-liposuction syncope (fainting). The morning following the surgery, especially after urinating it is not uncommon for the patient to faint. This can be serious if the patient falls and experiences a head or neck injury. Complications can arise if patients use drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and warfarin (Coumadin) which increase bleeding. Vitamin E, Red wine and some herbal remedies can have the same affect.

With obesity reaching epidemic levels, there is increasing demand for liposuction as a perceived solution to ones battle with the bulge. At Vancouver Lipo Laser., we believe that the heart of an effective and long term weight loss program is a permanent lifestyle change including exercise, a healthy diet and nutritional supplements where needed. In fact, we do not consider liposuction to be a weight loss method at all. It is a type of body contouring which involves some potential risks and complications. These risks range from unnatural looking skin, lumpiness or dents to possible disability or even death.
Vancouver Lipo Laser
offers a non-invasive alternative to liposuction. However, if you are still considering liposuction a good resource is www.liposuction.com which provides a wealth of information on liposuction and an assessment of the risks and possible complications associated with the procedure.

Intimidating Procedure
